때로는.... 생각한다. 나 역시, 다들 으레 그러하듯 소소한 일에 기뻐하고 슬퍼하고, 화를 내고 즐거워 할 수 있었을 지도 모른다고. 그를 나눌 수 있었을 지도 모른다고. 하지만, 이젠 아무런 의미도 없게 되었다.
허무한 가운데서도, 문득 그런 느낌이 든다. 단지, 일어나야 할 일이 일어났을 뿐이라고.

어제 합평에서 나온 이야기.
"XX님은, 글이 착해요. 작가가 '일반적인 의미에서 착한 것'이 아니라, '당위와 명분을 중시하는 경향'이 강하다 보니 그런 게 글에서 배어 나는 것 같아요."
선하다... 는 건 나쁠 게 없다. 하지만 내가 어떤 사람인지에 대해 외부로부터 규정지워 지는 게 왠지 억울한 느낌이 들어서 이전 합평작 중 하나였던 모 글은 어둡지 않았냐고 항의했다(왠지 좀 항의의 촛점이 틀린 것 같기도 한데). "어둡지만 또한 착한 글도 있어요. 그러니 다음 번에는 '나쁜' 글을 써 보세요."
밤을 꼬박 새워가며 생각해 본 결과... 난 아무래도 역시 '도덕적'인 인간인 것 같지는 않다. 하지만 해도 될 일과 해선 안 될 일, 좋아하는 일과 싫어하는 일에 대한 내적인 기준이 있고 그 기준을 항상 강하게 의식한다는 면에서는 '윤리적'인 인간 같기는 하다. 나쁜 소설을 써 보는 것이 과연 내가 지금 직면한 벽을 넘어설 수 있는 대안이 되어 줄지에 대해서는 회의적이지만, 나의 그러한 윤리성에 내 소설이 영향을 받는다는 것은 충분히 설득력이 있다.
하지만... 모르겠다, 여전히. 대체 나는 더 나은 소설을 쓰기 위해, 어떻게, 얼마나 더 노력해야 하는걸까.
대체 얼마나 더 기다려야 알 수 있을까?

최근 인라인 스케이트를 타기 시작했다. 이제 갓 시작했으니만큼 당연히 서툴 수 밖에 없고, 몇 번이고 넘어지고 다시 일어나기를 반복하며 조금씩 익숙해져 가고 있다.
멈추면 쓰러지게 된다. 쓰러지기 싫다면 계속 달려야 한다.
하지만, 쓰러지지 않고서는 달리는 법을 배울 수 없다.
다시 가보자.

작년 이 무렵, 그 친구는 말했다. 애인과 친구는 별개이며, 다른 친구를 만난다고 해서 뭐라고 할 정도로 옹졸한 사람과 사귀는 건 아니니 걱정할 필요 없다고. 아마 그 말은 사실일 것이다. 하지만, 그래도 내겐 마음에 걸리는 부분이 있다.
아무래도 그 친구는 사회인이고... 적어도 방학 때는 여유가 있는 나와 달리 거의 항상 바쁘다. 주말에는 좀 쉬기도 하고, 데이트도 해야 할 것이다. 아무래도 친구보다는 애인과 보내는 시간이 더 소중할테고, 그건 당연한 일이다. 그에 대해선 문제가 없다.
하지만 내가 언제 한번 보자고 할 경우 데이트가 있거나 다른 약속이 있다거나 하면 거절할 수 밖에 없을텐데, 난 그런 부담을 지우고 싶지 않다. 안 그래도 한번 절교할 뻔한 이후로 부담될 까봐 가능한 연락도 띄엄띄엄하고 있는 참인데.
결론적으로 그 친구 쪽에서 내게 언제 시간이 나니 얼굴도 좀 보고 놀자고 해 주는 쪽이 더 낫긴 한데... 그 친구는 그런 쪽으로 적극적인 편이 아니기도 하고... 무엇보다도,
과연 내가, 그 친구에게 있어 그럴 만큼 소중한지 모르겠다.
지금도 여전히 그 친구는 내게 소중한 사람이며, 서로 취향도 다르고 미래도 다를 망정 잃고 싶지 않다. 하지만 과연 그 친구도 날 그렇다고 여길까. 만일 그렇지 않다면.... 난 그걸 강요할 수 없다.
진실과 선의로 대한다고 해서 상대가 그걸 그대로 돌려줘야 한다는 법은 없다. 물론 배반한다면 나는 내가 그 때까지 상대에게 보냈던 진실과 선의에 상응하는 무게의 증오와 원한으로 답하겠지만, 그냥 무시하는 것 정도는 충분히 있을 수 있는 일이다. 우정은 수평적이고 쌍방향적인 것이며, 내가 그 친구를 소중히 여기는 이상 난 '요구'할 수 없다. 다만 지금처럼 번민하며 애타게 바랄 뿐이다. 그것이 나의 명예- 사랑했던 사람을 잃어 버린 채, 친구마저 잃는 건 아닐까 고민하고 슬퍼하는 지금도 내 안에 속해 나를 보다 고결하게 만드는 유일한 가치다.

오랫동안 힘겹게 써내려 왔던 글을 완성하고, 술에 취한 채 잠자리에 든 날 꿈을 꾸었었다.
그 꿈 속에서는, 내가 한번- 그리고 아마도 영원히 잃어버렸다고 여기는 분이 내 팔 안에 안겨 있었다. 나는 그 분의 머릿결에 얼굴을 묻은 채 눈을 감고 있었고, 그 분은 말없이 내게 몸을 기대오고 있었다.
그 한없이 간절하고 아련하던 순간이 꿈이라는 걸, 난 그 때도 알고 있었던 것 같다.

시 창작 관련 수업을 듣다 과제로 시 1편을 써내야 할 것이 있었다. '봉하마을에 맑스주의자들' 운운하는 김지하의 발언 때문에 열받아 있던 참이라 그의 시를 패러디해서 대차게 까버렸다.
김지하는 중요한 사실을 망각하고 있다. 시는, 시인의 손을 떠났을 때부터 그의 것이 아님을. 그 자신이 그의 옛 시를 호랑이 담배 필 적에 썼던 것이며, 지금의 자신에게는 어떤 의미도 갖지 못한다고 부정한다고 해도 그건 중요하지 않다. 그의 자기부정은 힘이 없다. 어쨌건 그토록 젊은 글을 쓸 수 있던 그 시절의 그도 '김지하'이긴 마찬가지이며, 그 시를 읽었던 이들에게 그것이 어떤 의미를 갖고 있으며 어떤 깊이를 가지고 있느냐가 더 중요하기에.
늦은 밤이다, 나는 잠이 오지 않는다.
