Theatre of tragedy, "Black as the devil painteth"

An artist is what is call'd the self the brush holdeth -
Though hath it then caringly caress'd the Canvas of tomorrow?
O Canvas! for thee I hold my tool - still passionless it quivereth
Minding not that my hands are more than apt;
My Muse,
 

예술가는 붓을 쥐고서 자신의 이름을 절규하는 도다

내일의 캔버스에는 어떤 그림을 그릴 수 있을 것인가?

오, 캔버스여! 난 내 도구들을 움켜쥐고 있다 - 떨리는 이 무감각함이여

내 손은 재능 이상의 무언가임을 알고 있노라

나의 뮤즈여,

Where is hidden
The blue-hued arch'neath the High Heaven's rich emblazonry
The flowery meadow, embrac'd by the horizon -
snowflaked and aery mountains,
In which the barebreasted maidens dance to the lay o'midsummer,
Aloft the distant lazy flapping of the doves in vaingfore.
 

어디에 숨겨져 있는 것인가

푸른 색조의 아치 아래 드높은 천상의 찬란함이여

지평선에 감싸인 꽃 핀 초원이여 -

눈 덮인 청명한 산들이여,

가슴을 드러낸 처녀들이 한 여름 가운데 누워 있는 곳

저 멀리 위에 비둘기들이 헛되이 게으르게 날개짓하네

O Canvas! wherefore canst thou these images not allow? -
I deem a projection of my Theatre they sould be! -
Then, I challenge thee the wisdom of naysaying the yearns o'mine -
What is this unforeseen that not enjoyneth light
shades to be skillfully painted?

 

오 캔버스여! 왜 그대는 그 모습을 허락치 않는가? -

난 나의 극장에 공연해야만 할 연극을 상상하고 있는데! -

난 나의 갈망을 부정함으로써 그대에게 도전하노니 -

예견된 바 없는 이 쾌락은 무엇인가

그늘은 숙련된 솜씨로 채색되는가?

The raven sky prey'd on by the snowfill'd, blustery clouds
Unadorned the meadow - hunger driveth the wolf out of the wood,
The maidens chained and whipped within a dreary dungeon -
And, fo! 'twixt the wizen roses a mossy grave;
"The Devil is as Black as He Painteth" -
O Canvas! wherefore?...  

눈을 품은, 휘몰아치는 구름에 기원하노라

적나라한 초지에 - 숲 밖의 굶주린 늑대에,

처녀들은 공포스런 감옥 속에서 사슬에 묶이고 채찍질 당하노니 -

아아! 이끼 낀 묘지에 장미는 시든다;

“악마는 그의 그림처럼 검었노라” -

오 캔버스여! 왜인가?

이번 거울 앤솔로지 제출용 작품인 <검은 캔버스>의 컨셉이 된 음악인, 씨애터 어브 트래지디의 곡 <악마의 그림처럼 검은>. 초안은 이미 재작년에 써 둔 게 있긴 한데.... 시간이 제법 지났으니, 이번에 다시 쓰면 꽤나 많이 바뀔 듯. 그래도 마무리는 그대로 갈 예정.
